For a repair shop, there is little profit in the $29.95 oil change. By the time a shop pays its technician, pays for the oil, the filter, and the hazardous waste disposal fees, there’s no money left. This low profit margin is worsened by the extremely competitive “Quick Lube” business, which forces local repair shops to refrain from raising prices, despite rising costs.

This all begs the question: If oil change specials, which range from $15.95 to $29.95, clearly produce very low profits, then why do so many service facilities advertise oil change specials?

The answer is actually very simple: It gets you in the door. Service centers know that once they have your vehicle, they can sell you additional work.

Suggesting additional work is called upselling, and it’s a primary profit tactic of every service facility. Here’s a typical example. You drop your vehicle off for “just an oil change.” Upon completion your service representative smiles and proudly states, “We noticed that your air filter was dirty; so we popped in a new one.” You may think great; what wonderful service!”

What really occurred is that you were casually upsold an air filter. It probably wasn’t needed; it
certainly wasn’t replaced according to any factory recommendation, and you were definitely overcharged for what was most likely a poorly-fitting, aftermarket, inferior air filter.

Here’s a real-life example that occurred recently. This particular vehicle had 54,000 miles on it, and was dropped off at a local shop for “just an oil change.” Upon paying the bill, the customer was handed an estimate for $199 to replace his air filter and top radiator hose. Shocked at the price, he called me.

After review, I found that the air filter suggestion was premature. It didn’t need replacement until the manufacturer’s recommended 60,000-mile service interval. The top hose was also premature. In fact, it did not need replacement at all, despite a very minor problem easily addressed during the factory
maintenance schedule—at no extra cost.

Check out the aftermarket part prices quoted below (including the unnecessary radiator hose). Compare these to the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the factory OEM parts (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

Local Shop Aftermarket Air Filter: $32
Manufacturer OEM Filter, MSRP: $17

Local Shop Aftermarket Top Hose: $36
Manufacturer OEM Top Hose, MSRP: $19

Notice that this local shop was doubling the price of the OEM parts with its inferior aftermarket parts.

Now, let’s look at the labor time that was quoted.

Local Shop Labor Time: 2.0 @ $60 per hour = $120
Manufacturer Labor Time: 0.9 @ $60 per hour = $81

Notice that the shop labor time estimate for the repairs was 2 hours. This is more than twice
the manufacturer’s recommendations (even after calculating manufacturer times against the industry standard multiplier).

Had the local shop abided by the vehicle’s particular maintenance intervals instead of trying to make a quick buck, it should have recommended a 60,000-mile service at the next visit. This would have better served the client, saved him $199, and maintained the vehicle properly. Instead, they lost a client forever!

What needs to be made crystal clear is that this type of price-gouging occurs every day in every type of service facility in one form or another across the automotive service industry.

This type of price-gouging is considered normal!

Greg is an active 2 wheeled biker. The first time this person rode on one, this individual knew this was the best way to drive through the open road in the hopes of adventure.

When this individual got married, a part of this biker wanted to settle down and keep the memory of the past behind. This is the reason that this father of two would sometimes bring the kids out around the neighborhood to reminisce this memory.

State laws require the biker to wear a helmet when driving on the street. The passengers are also required to do the same even if the one in the back is a kid.

Greg knew that helmets for kids are not available where the motorcycle was purchased. This is because the place only sold models for adults so none of these will fit. The best place to go to then is the sports shop since people can get helmets for skateboarding and bicycling.

Here are tips to get the right motorcycle helmet for the kid.

· Before putting it on the child, it will be a good idea to check for defects such as cracks, loose padding, frayed straps or exposed metal that could be unsafe for the child.

· If its safe to put on, the parent must make sure that his will snugly go around the child’s head. If this is too heavy, this should be changed for something else. This should be worn for 30 minutes to make sure it is comfortable for those long trips.

· To prevent this from falling off, it is advisable to get the one that has strong straps with two rings so it can be securely fastened.

· The helmet for the kid should be just like the driver’s that come in bright colors such as red, yellow, white or orange. This should be made of reflective material that may have stickers in the back or in the sides making it easy for motorists in the back to notice there is a motorcycle in front many yards away.

· The best helmets to buy should be those that have a sticker inside certifying that this has gone numerous tests.

After about an hour in the shop, Greg was able to find two helmets for the kids. The family then went home so everyone can get on the bike and make that first road trip a few blocks away from where these people lived.

The popularity of ATV riding has been increasing tremendously over the years so, if you’re one of those looking for a good ATV sale to make your purchase worthwhile, you’re reading the right article. How to find an ATV sale to save some money – it’s pretty simple, really. There are conventional and more technology-driven ways to do this and we’re listing them all down here.

Walk your way towards an ATV sale
The most common (and most inconvenient) method of finding an ATV sale to just take a stroll around your local ATV store. You’ll never know. Even if you’re not a frequent customer there, it won’t hurt to just take a walk around the area to see if they have a sale for ATVs there or not. If they have a newsletter, sign up for it because most ATV stores will inform their customers of promotions and sales that they have through their newsletter. The smaller stores might not have a website that you can visit but the bigger ones will most definitely have one. Surf into their website and if they have a newsletter subscription form, fill it up and email them! This is the fastest and most convenient way of being informed first-hand whenever they hold a sale.

Ask around if there’s a sale
The other not-so-technologically-savvy way of being in the know about an ongoing or forthcoming ATV sale is to ask around. Let’s just say that you have a group of friends with whom you always ride ATV with, let the word out that you’re looking for an ATV and that you would appreciate it if they would let you know if they spotted a sale. As ancient and unimpressive as it sounds, we dare say that this is, by far, one of the fastest and most effective methods of finding an ATV sale.

Surf for a sale through ATV websites
Ok, here’s what you do if you don’t know how to do this and is not used to purchasing stuff on the Internet. Go to your favorite search engine and type in the word ATV for sale. Find ATV distributor websites (make sure they are direct distributors located not-too-far from your location) and bookmark their website URLs. Then sign up for their newsletter if they have one and give them your email address so that they can email you whenever they have a sale. So, whenever they have a sale, they will send you an email to tell you that you can enjoy some savings off the ATVs that they sell through their websites! Go into their websites and if you find an ATV that you like on sale, get it online before the sale ends.

Customer Reviews

Review date : 2008-12-08
This charger is top notch! Long power cord, long charger cord. Keeps my 1966 Mustang’s gel battery topped off and ready to roll. I plan to move it outside so it can keep a battery ready on a 1951 John Deere B.

There really isn’t any downside to this product. Small, easy to use, well built. Couldn’t ask for more!

Review date : 2008-11-16
My collection of vehicles includes 3 BRP ATV’s, 2 Seadoos, 5 MC’s, 1 scoot, and two cars that are all seasonal or infrequent use. I’ve had vector 1.5A chargers, Schumakers, etc and in my opinion the waterproof Battery Tender is by far the best I’ve tried. The quick disconnect with battery rings, alligator clips and even cigarette lighter adapter provides the perfect option for each vehicle/application. With the Seadoos I screw the charger into a tree and run the optional 25 foot cable extension out to the seadoos - each of which is equipped with quick disconnect and battery rings - no weather/water issues and no starting issues for the first year ever. W/ the MC’s Last spring I had issues with water boil out of the batteies using the vectors - 1.5A was q bit too fast on 14 and 16 series MC batteries. Tried the BT waterproof and no issues. So pleased I have since ordered a couple more batches for a total of ten waterproof tenders. I especially like the bright yellow/green light which allows for an easy visual check while comijng in through the garage to make sure each battery is fully charged. A worthwhile investment that should pay for itself many times over!

Review date : 2008-10-31
Love this since I store my classic for months and I can always count on a quick start

Review date : 2008-10-04
Deltran Battery Tender 12-Volt 800 milliamp Waterproof Battery Charger

The Battery Tender Waterproof Tender operates in essentially 3 stages. It first initiates an absorption charge that attempts to charge your battery to 14.5 VDC at up to 0.8A (or 800mA). This bit of information was not readily advertised, so I was concerned when I heard my battery making gurgling noises while the LED was "amber" for the past 8 hours. This battery was only 2 years old with less than 5000 miles and had been maintained since day 1, so I was sure it wasn’t a problem with the battery. It turns out that it was nothing to be concerned about since this charger was designed to be used for long-term storage of batteries.

My previous charger, a Black & Decker / Vector 2A "smart" automatic maintainer tried to keep my battery voltage at 14.75 VDC at 2A for over 24 hours. Needless to say, I was concerned when I saw this happening with a brand new Battery Tender. I dug around on their website and discovered a PDF that indicated the Tender would try to reach 14.5 VDC for the absorption phase, at which point it would switch to a trickling charge and finally the maintenance charge. I logged all of the readings and confirmed that once the battery reached 14.4-14.5 VDC, it would start to trickle down finally remaining at about 13.12-13.22 VDC @ 20-100 mA. A modern car’s parasitic draw is about 10-50 mA, so the maintenance charge is to compensate for the parasitic draw and for self-discharging of the battery. I discovered the Tender does a much better job at a maintenance charge because I have yet to see the Tender go into the Amber-LED mode, whereas my Vector/B&D occasionally switches back and forth even on a fully charged battery. I logged some data from the Vector/B&D and discovered that once the LED is green, it provides NO current to the battery. In essence, the Vector/B&D just shuts off once it reaches 14.5 VDC - which is not as useful as providing an actual maintenance charge. The Battery Tender wins. Quite a few people have commented that their Sears "smart/automatic" maintainer and other brands constantly switch between the Green and Amber modes. I suspect those chargers are doing the same thing as the Vector/B&D. They just shut off when the battery is "charged", which is not very good for the battery. It needs to hold a maintenance charge to prevent sulfation.

The Tender Waterproof is fully encapsulated with a thermally conductive potting material. This makes the unit quite heavy for such a small device. It uses a quick-disconnect 2-terminal fitting that is commonly used for battery chargers/maintainers. It comes with ring terminals or large battery clamps all fused with a 7.5A ATC fuse. I made my own wiring harness with smaller alligator clips since I don’t have room under the hood for large clamps, and I do not want to permanently install a set of ring terminals that can short out or cause other problems in the long-run.

Pros: Battery Tender has an excellent reputation for making reliable chargers. The Waterproof unit is quite durable and is insulated from shock, water, corrosion, extreme temperatures and other environmental variables.

Cons: At 800mA max current capacity, this charger will work rather slowly for 50Ah or larger capacity batteries, so expect 10-12 hours upon hooking it up to a battery before the LED turns green. The benefit of this is that it prevents boiling the battery or generating a lot of heat due to excessive current.

Overall: If you’re using the charger in an environment subject to cold or hot temperature swings with plenty of moisture, such as in a detached garage for your motorcycle, boat, stored vehicle, or even a daily driver, I highly recommend the Waterproof unit over the Tender Jr or Tender Plus.

UPDATE:
I decided to purchase an additional Battery Tender Waterproof because I needed another charger for my daily driver and because I experienced no problems with the first unit.

Review date : 2008-09-15
I put these on all my vehicles that are in storage. I bought them on a recommendation of another car collector. His cars sit all year run only a few times and he’s not had a dead battery in years. Fully automatic, just leave it plugged in without a worry! Waterproof so I have mine mounted on board in my wave runners.

I have been enjoying reading the news these past few days, perhaps in a perverse sort of way. Pundits and prognosticators are all forecasting the pending doom of the world?s largest automaker as if the approaching layoffs and restructuring are signaling the venerable automaker?s end. Certainly, GM has some problems ? big ones ? but the company isn?t likely to go away or even file for bankruptcy. The news isn?t all that it seems to be on this subject either?GM will survive and likely thrive in the decades ahead.

Okay, I am not crazy. Could GM go away? Of course, as could any poorly managed company. Yes, executives are overpaid and so are union workers. There?I said it. GM has been taking it on the chin from Asian automakers for three decades now and their U.S. market share continues to dwindle. Still, it isn?t doomsday for the general. Far from it. Here are some things that I believe GM is attempting to do to as they restructure.

Reduced Legacy Costs ? GM won an important battle with its unions to force workers and retirees to pony up more money for their share of rising healthcare costs. Before you cry ?foul? most Americans are paying heavily for their health insurance, while most autoworkers pay little or nothing. Reportedly, GM?s legacy costs add $1500 to the price of every vehicle. Hardly a way for any company to compete, right?

Divisional Trimming ? GM axed Oldsmobile and is, supposedly, looking at whether Pontiac or Buick should go next. Saturn looks safe, primarily because of the division?s excellent dealer network while Chevrolet is the household name for so many car owners and is, therefore, untouchable. Cadillac is once again doing well and is competing effectively against Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, and Infiniti. Cadillac easily outsells rival Lincoln more than 2 to 1.

Captive Imports ? I mentioned in a related article that China?s Chery Automotive Company will be importing a line of vehicles to the US commencing in Summer 2007. With a starting price as low as $6995, there is no way that GM can compete with them. Neither can Ford, Toyota, Honda, or Nissan for that matter. So, what is the option? Import one or two ultra low priced lines of cars from Korea via the company?s Daewoo division. Currently, the $9995 Chevy Aveo is the low price king in the US. This Daewoo built model is being overhauled and the new model should arrive in the US in about one year. Expect the price to drop as GM prepares for Chery?s onslaught. Expect GM to pressure their unions for further give backs as American highways are soon flooded with cheap Chinese imports.

Operational Spread — The US auto market is the most lucrative in the world. Expect GM to strengthen luxury brands including Cadillac and Hummer as many of these vehicles bring in profits of ten thousand dollars or more per vehicle. Gas prices are coming down and America?s thirst for profitable trucks and SUVs has hardly been quenched. Still, look for GM to do a few hybrids, add some more diesels, and continue researching hydrogen production.

Union members should be alarmed by all these looming changes. Cutbacks will happen but they will only be wider and deeper if union opposition remains so strong. Yes, the unions could kill off the general, but that would be suicide for the workers. Better to pick whatever battles you can win and hope for the best.

The general isn?t dead and it hardly is dying despite everything you read and hear [personally, I believe GM is beating the ?we?re getting clobbered? drum to squeeze out more give backs from the unions. Globalism is changing the way business is done and it would do all of us good to wake up to that fact?like it or not.

Odors in our RV’s come in many different forms, caused by many different sources. There are holding tank odors, pet odors, cooking, smoke, must and mildew odors, just to name a few. Some odors are caused when the RV is put in storage for long periods of time and other odors are caused through normal use of the RV. Our concern is what we can do to prevent some of these odors. I want to tell you about some RV products that I have personally tested and use, available to RVers to help eliminate some of these odors.

Because RV’s are small in size, when compared to a home, odors tend to be more pronounced. Add to this that the RV sits, closed up, for periods of time and the odor problems are compounded even more. This leads to one of the key factors to controlling RV odors, ventilation. Ventilation not only helps with odors, but it can limit the amount of heat build-up in the RV too. Many RV owners store their RV’s outside and are concerned with leaving windows or vents open, exposing the RV to Mother Nature.

When I worked for an RV dealership, we installed many MaxxAir® ventilation products designed specifically for RV’s. One great feature about these ventilation products is that you can leave the windows and vents open, even when it’s raining outside. From the standard vent covers to their powerful MaxxFan, these ventilation products will keep the air moving in your RV. You can see the complete line at www.maxxair.com. To view my short MaxxFan® installation video visit rveducation101.com/videostream/?clip=MaxxFanInstall.

Now, with the ventilation problem solved we can focus on other types of odors that can linger in the RV. These odor molecules aren’t just in the air, they get in the fabrics, carpets, ceiling, window treatments and other areas of the RV. Pet odors, smoke, and must and mildew odors can be extremely difficult to remove from an RV. I have witnessed RV interiors that have been professionally cleaned and odors like smoke still remain afterwards. I have also experimented with many different odor controlling products, but perhaps the best product I have found for eliminating difficult odors is called OdorCide by Winston Company. OdorCide is environmentally safe, hypoallergenic, doesn’t stain and kills these tough odors instantly. For more information about OdorCide visit www.winstoncompany.com.

This brings us to the least favorite topic when discussing RV odors, RV holding tank odors. The good news is there are some very effective methods for controlling these odors too, and it doesn’t involve strong chemicals that can be dangerous to humans, pets and septic systems. First it would probably be helpful to explain why we sometimes get a strong odor coming from the RV black water holding tank, especially when you are traveling. RV holding tanks are designed with a vent pipe going from the tank to the roof on the RV. The holding tank odors accumulate in the tank and can’t really be vented outside because there is no air pressure to force the gasses (odors) up and out of the vent pipe. The real problem occurs when wind blows across the vent cap on top of the RV roof, or when you’re traveling. This higher air pressure forces air down the vent pipe pushing the tank gasses (odors) to the only other way out of the system, the toilet. Whenever the air pressure is higher inside the holding tank, than it is inside the RV, the odor escapes into the RV by way of the toilet.

I’m happy to say that I have found a product that will solve holding tank odor problems that are caused by the design of the RV waste water system. It’s called RV-360 and it’s a redesigned breather system that attaches to the top of the vent pipe and actually draws the fumes out of the holding tank. It works when the RV is stationary and when it’s moving.

Here’s how it works. As the wind passes over your rooftop it will direct the RV-360 so that the exhaust port is pointing down wind, away from where the wind is coming from, drawing the tank fumes up and out of the vent pipe. In certain wind conditions, the factory installed vent cap does the opposite and actually forces wind down the vent pipe, pushing holding tank odors back into the RV. The RV-360 always draws the gasses out of the tank. To watch my short installation video on the RV 360 visit rveducation101.com/videostream/?clip=360.

Another problem associated with RV holding tank odors is the use of strong chemicals to help control these holding tank odors. Some of these chemicals are dangerous to humans, pets, and the septic systems we empty our holding tanks in to. Because little water is used, in comparison to a domestic waste water system, RV holding tank wastewater is far more concentrated. The organic strength from the mixture in an RV holding tank can be fifteen to twenty times stronger than a typical wastewater system. This problem is compounded when the RVer gets some odors from the holding tank and dumps even more chemicals in the holding tank in an attempt to control the odors.

As many of you, who know my work know; I am a big advocate for saving our RV dump stations. I have discovered a holding tank treatment that is environmentally friendly and safe to use in septic systems. It’s called Oxy-Kem, by Winston Company. And it’s not just a deodorizer; Oxy-Kem cleans the holding tanks too, up to 500% better than chemical, enzyme and formaldehyde based products. You can use it in the black and gray water holding tanks and it comes in convenient drop in packs, so there’s no measuring, waste or mess. The oxygen activated technology actually eliminates RV holding tank odors instantly. For more information on Oxy-Kem visit www.winstoncompany.com.

One final note about RV odors: A lot of RVers have a problem with odors in the RV refrigerator when it is not being used, either in between trips or for winter storage. After the freezer compartment defrosts you should clean the refrigerator thoroughly. Leave the refrigerator doors open and place some baking soda or charcoal (the kind you grill with) inside to absorb any odors.

So it’s safe to say that with proper ventilation and a few good RV products you can eliminate all of the tough odors commonly associated with RV’s.

Happy Camping!

Thirty four years ago, in a book I wrote and was published, entitled, How To Settle Your Own Insurance Claim, I stated: “An eye witness can make or break your case. If you’ve been able to keep your wits about you the first thing you should do, immediately after impact has occurred, is to find somebody who observed it. After having spotted such a person, don’t be bashful. Go right over to them and ask if they saw the accident ? If they did, jot down their name, address and telephone number. Should they drive away before you can zero in on them, make note of their motor vehicle’s registration number so you can later obtain their name through the department of motor vehicle office.”

What I wrote, over thirty years ago, remains true today. (As a matter of fact, when it comes to insurance claims, little has changed over he past sixty years)! Companies like Rock Solid Insurance Corporation are still raising rates into the stratosphere while crying in their suds about all the money claims are costing them and those employed by them are still taking advantage of every motor vehicle accident victim they can sink their claws into.

A WITNESS CAN BE CRUCIAL: When you’ve been smashed into one of the most important sources of help - - when it comes to digging up information and assembling a record of the accident - - is the eye witness to that impact, with their accounts and recollections as to what happened. Try to secure a detailed written statement (or tape recorded or maybe even a video statement) from them. That “witness person” could be a passenger in your own or other vehicles, pedestrians, onlookers and bystanders at the scene of the accident, and/or driver’s of other motor vehicle’s who were not directly involve in the accident.

UTILIZING THE WITNESS: How do you actually go about the task of securing the relevant witnesses, testimonies and cooperation? To begin with, know this: It’s important that you get to a witness first - - before that a fast talking adjuster corners them and uses his expertise to twist the facts. By moving quickly you stand a good chance of getting the witness committed to your account of the events and/or to come down on your side of the case. If they do that’s money in the bank!

You should contact each witness of the accident (identified from the list of persons you compiled at the time of the accident - - or perhaps even discovered in the police report) and talk to them about what they saw, or know, concerning the accident. The ideal procedure is to get them to write out, in detail, what they observed, in their own words. If they’re not willing (or able) to do this, then write their statement yourself (or merely jot down on a pad) what each witness tells you, then have them sign and date it. Try to capture their recollections, impressions and observations of what happened.

Upon completing the interview of each witness, and taking his (or her) statement, ask that individual to read it. When they’re finished have them sign and date it, with their home address and phone number included. (If the statement is more than one page have them initial and date the bottom of each page, then ask them to apply their full and complete signature at the very end.)

You should make a copy of what they signed and send it to them. That’s so they’ll know exactly what they told you - - if, later on down the road, when the adjuster try’s to hustle and con them into stating something differently - - they’ll be able to stick to their guns because they’ll have written proof to show that adjuster exactly what they told you.

LOCATING A MISSING WITNESS: You may be unable to directly contact or locate the whereabouts of a witness whose name, home address or phone number you have obtained. (The witness may have moved). Here are two helpful steps you can take to locate a witness:

1. Send a “Certified” or “Registered” letter to that witness, addressed to his (or her) last known address with the “Return Receipt Requested” plus the “Address Only” box checked off. This way, if you receive back from the post office the return receipt signed by the witness, or executed by the post office, you should find, fully entered therein, the current address of the witness.

2. If you have their full name and address and you’re comfortable surfing through cyber-space there are dozens of ways to locate a person via your computer. Should you not be wise to the ways of the internet find somebody to help you who is.

IN SUMMARY: I spent most of my life investigating motor vehicle accidents. First as I worked my way through college as a Private Investigator, specifically assigned to motor vehicle accidents, next as a Special Investigator in the United States Navy, covering major military motor vehicle accidents in the mid-west, and then, after my naval daze, over thirty years as a Claims Adjuster, Supervisor, Manager and Trial Assistant. I know, from personal experience, a witness to a motor vehicle accident can be invaluable when it comes to making your case. Witnesses may be able to describe things in an accident that confirm what you know happened, thus backing up your side of the story. They may also provide you with information you were not aware of, which indicates how the other operator was at fault. A witness may have heard a verbal remark that someone other than you was at fault. Even a witness, who did not actually see your motor vehicle get crashed into, may have observed you, soon after impact, and confirm the pain and discomfort you were experiencing. A signed statement handed to Adjuster Hard-Nose, taken from somebody who did not know you personally, detailing the suffering you were enduring at the scene, right after you were bashed into, is even more money in the bank!

On that same subject of “Pain and Suffering” the adjuster might try to convince you that what a witness says is less important if what is being stated is coming from a friend or relative. Don’t you believe it! There are hundreds of thousands of motor vehicle insurance accident claims on record that prove this contention to be false. If a friend or relative actually saw the accident and what they observed proves you’re not at fault in any way, shape, manner or form (and/or can detail how much physical discomfort you displayed at the scene after impact) their value as a witness (on either issue) is worth its weight in gold. How much the “Pain and Suffering” you endured is worth can be discovered via THE BASE FORMULA contained within my latest book AUTO ACCIDENT PERSONAL INJURY INSURANCE CLAIM (How To Evaluate And Settle Your Loss) found at either caraccidentclaims.com or autoaccidentclaims.com.

It is no secret that Volkswagen has been through a lot of controversies lately that have shocked the whole automotive industry. But despite such, Europe’s largest automaker and producer of the popular Volkswagen relay has come out unscathed and still in its full grandeur ready to face more challenges that come its way. For the almost 62 years that Volkswagen has spent in the automotive industry it has its shares of ups and downs but the fact that it is still Europe’s largest automaker simply shows that its achievements has overshadowed its failures.

And just recently, Volkswagen was awarded with the Silver 2007 Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany for its corporate book called “Volkswagen Corporate Design Essentials.” This “brand bible” gives a clear documentation of brand tonality and visual presentation of the design principles of the Volkswagen brand. The awarding was held at a public ceremony at Frankfurt am Main during the Ambiente International trade fair.

The German Design Council has invited an international jury to pick the Design Award Winners. There were 940 nominations but only 25 products were chosen to receive Germany’s only official design award. According to Jochen Sengpiehl, Head of Marketing at Volkswagen, “For Volkswagen, corporate identity and corporate design play an extremely important role. They contribute to the high awareness of the Volkswagen brand. We are proud to have won the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany.”

The Design Award was presented by the Federal Ministry of Economic and Trade. But the organizer of the awarding event was the German Design Council. The Ministries and Senators for Trade and Industry of the German Sates and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Trade nominate individual companies and their products for the Design Award. The contest also requires for nominated products to at least have a national or international prize at their sleeves.

The “Volkswagen Corporate Design Essentials” corporate book has already received a red dot communication award as well as a prize in the Best of Corporate Publishing competition. MetaDesign, a Berlin-based agency has created the design for the corporate book and for the Volkswagen brand corporate design system.

Complete details of the 2007 Design Award are published on the comprehensive catalog created by Birkhauser Verlag. An exhibition showcasing all the winners is going to be organized after the award ceremony. The exhibition will also tour on several locations in Germany and also in other countries.
