Free Cars - What’s Behind Those Free Car Programs

In the last few years, a new technology has developed that allows large multi-color vinyl decals to be produced easily and inexpensively. These decals can be applied to cars, trucks, and vans without damage to the vehicle’s paint. They are seen every day on commercial vehicles.

Advertising firms recognized the potential benefits of being able to place attention-getting ads on both commercial vehicles such as taxis and buses, and on private vehicles. Private owners who were willing to place ad decals (called “wraps”) on their vehicles would be paid for the service. And in many cases, new leased vehicles would be provided to drivers if they would agree to drive and park the vehicles in high traffic areas so that they would be easily seen.

Many advertising companies now have these kinds of programs. Most are in or near large metropolitan areas. Some advertise for interested drivers and vehicle owners, but most do not. Many of these advertisers can be found on the Internet, although it’s somewhat difficult to find programs in a specific area or city.

This is why there are now a number of Internet-based services that produce “directories” of advertising companies who offer “free car” or “pay to drive” programs. The directories list advertising programs in the United States as well as in many other countries.

There is a great deal of variety in the quality and content of the directories offered by these companies, and their promises must be taken with the proverbial grain of salt. Most charge about $30-$40 for a subscription or “membership” that keeps the directory updated. It requires some care in selecting a good company.

If you decide to purchase from one of these companies, look for at least a 90-day money-back guarantee because it may take that long to find out if this kind of program will work for you. Do not subscribe to any “premium” services that may be offered by the directory provider.

For more details on “free car” programs, how they work, and what it takes to qualify, see leaseguide.com/articles/freecar.htm Free Cars - Fact or Fiction?.
